Squid Game Web Series Story Review

For American viewers, The Squid Game might appear out of nowhere. But it was quite an unexpected blow.

The show, which Netflix boss Ted Sarandos says will become Netflix’s most-watched series, dominates charts worldwide and is a testament to the streamer’s global strategy. And while it’s funny that so many people are curious about a project they’re watching subtitled (or dubbed), it feels like a novel for people to come together on a project that lets them do it in both directions.

“Squid Game”, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, shows competition with about 456 participants, in which whoever survives the brutal glove of deadly events is awarded unlimited wealth. These stages are borrowed from the game’s operation, which provides brutality of simple irony: more than half of the athletes are shot, for example in the first stage, the “red light, green light” version in which those who move after they are shot at a red light.

More than half of the competition – about 200 plus people – was downloaded, and “Squid Game” is hardly ashamed to show courage. The violence is deeply intimate and impersonal: although the participants’ lives are disrupted by brutal directness, the shooters are masked employees of the game (or, in the case of Red Light, Green Light, robot dolls).

Deaths come from random officials we know less about than we know about the players in the game. What we gradually learn from the tricks of a detective who infiltrate the system is that they are completely bought in, follow their own rules, and firmly believe in the games they work on with a certain baroque innocence.

The fact that both gamers and game developers are tied to the rhythm of competition and have odd loyalties has a clear and straightforward line. It is structurally strong and looks chic at first glance. The same thing happened with the show’s early setup, as the surviving players had the option of leaving after the initial bloodbath and eventually returning voluntarily because they needed so much money.

(Their situation is truly an interesting part of contemporary Korean culture, including North Korean defectors and migrant workers from Pakistan.) After seeing the harsh realities they face in the game and at home, we are forced to head over to Ponder the Survival Chance in the game. squid could be better than in modern society.

But that was the starting point from where the series did nothing on the development path. The “squid game” is increasing relentlessly, increasing the stakes and the level of inhumanity.

(The initial shot of hundreds of corpses seems difficult to overcome, but he crosses the line in a demonstration of the brutality of gamers, who alternate schematically with their incredible friendliness.) Showmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk insisted that he wrote the screenplay for the 2008 series before taking on the project.

currently with a storyline similar to the Hunger Games book and film series. If we compare the two, I would say that Hunger Games showed the audience more clearly what could be the reason why the last part of it lost popularity and why it is rarely discussed these days. Nobody wants to be told that they are wrong, that they enjoy what they love. In fact, the most obvious artwork presented to me was the far more flattering 2019 film, The Joker.

Here, as here, violence is vividly depicted, and the embellishment comes from a vain line of death and blood. Murder is a fetish way to up the ante in a nebulous political conversation without offering a solution. In both The Joker and The Squid Game, the concept of economic equality floats in the air before the killings begin, with the breadth of modern Korean low-end squid games finally being explored more as avatars of misfortune or injustice than heroes.

In both cases, the beautifully composed visual landscape – or a homage to 1970s – Scorsese pop and neon style play and images of rural childhood – appears to have been shattered by death. (It’s worth noting that much of Squid Game’s nostalgic visual palette comes specifically from Korean culture, an element that white American critics lacked in detail.)

As the series progresses, it becomes clear that Game Squid exists for a variety of reasons, including removing human organs from the slain and entertaining the chatty class of wealthy people – some of whom are described as white westerners – who bet on the outcome. Little can be said about the former, other than that it’s impressive that the series has found a way to show more directly and lightly how the human body can disintegrate.

Regarding the latter, it doesn’t seem ironic, or even a reasonable judgment, that the show encourages its audience to do almost the same thing as a very thirsty audience. For example, a colleague shows up at a party to watch the Squid Game and immediately starts threatening and harassing someone who thinks they are a junior officer and ends up attempting forced sexual intercourse.

Significantly, the show felt the need to press so hard to insist that people who watch the Squid Game for fun are more demoralized than people who watch, say, the Squid Game just for fun. As with the Joker, both sides insist that a culture that can lead to violence is inherently sick and abnormal while playing a version of the disorder that’s too exaggerated and overpowering.

To be clear, there’s a clear difference between real-world viewer stares and imaginary violence, even before Huang’s script spells it out dramatically. But perhaps this difference would be easier to see if piles of corpses were slaughtered in favor of a more interesting idea than this bad inequality.

A season-ending conversation between the game’s winner and its architects suggests that the game is inherently fun and to see if it’s possible for people to be good. (He believes they don’t, even though he’s seen various participants display teamwork, selflessness, and cooperation – but then he’s personally betrayed by the game winner, so his feelings can get a little harsh.
