BULDANA (MAHARASHTRA), November 19 (IANS) As part of Save Democracy initiative, Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a special campaign to distribute 100,000 copies of the Constitution of India to the people of the state.
The program, which is part of the party’s ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY), was taken up by the caste wing of the Maharashtra Congress led by Siddharth M. Hattiambire, party officials said.
“During the last eight years of BJP rule in the center, the constitution and democracy have been under serious threat. We have therefore decided to distribute copies of the constitution to citizens to make them aware of the challenge,” said Hatiambire.
He said that the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, B.R. Ambedkar gave India one of the best constitutions in the world and a democratic system of government under that constitution started after independence.
The Congress leader mentioned how he has upheld and protected the democratic rights of everyone in the country, from the common people to the powerful, regardless of caste or religion.
“The ‘unity in diversity’ spirit was the identity of the country until recently, but in recent years the BJP regime has at its core tried to destroy the country’s constitution and democratic ideals,” said Khathiambire.
The first copy of the Constitution was presented to a few people in the presence of senior state and center leaders such as Rajesh Lilotia, Jairam Ramesh and H.K. Patil, by the way, said a party official.
